Playing it cool with solar air-con
EL Company to fly flag in US with innovation (By Mabali Tanana)
Solar Cool, a Gonubie based company, has designed a cool, green air conditioner which is attracting attention in Africa and will be showcased in Atlanta, US, next week. On Fiday, the company received a South African National Energy Association award for innovation and energy saving.
Owner Antony Schwedhelm said the business had won various other awards in the energy sector in the two years it has been in operation.
He said he was surfing the internet looking for innovative ideas to revolutionise the air conditioning industry.
"There are amazing engineers in South Africa and I am exceptionally proud of that they will be flying our flag high in Atlanta next week, where we have been invited to the World Energy Awards Forum to represent out design. "The sun used to be enemy No 1 for air conditioning design and installers, but we have turned the sun's heat into an extra cooling capacity and huge savings for free, delivered by the sun."
Schwedhelm said the solar-as-sisted air conditioner operates on a patented renewable energy technolgy, which involved the installation of a thermal solar panel to increase the energy of the regrigerant while still a gas. "The technology can work on all scales of installation. "The larger the system the more the savings."
Schwedhelm said they had already attracted a lot of interest from goverment departments in Ghana and other parts of African continent.
"We are currently working on installations in the King Sabata Dalinyebo municipality, and we have also put up cooling systems at the Mercedes-Benz East London plant, Southern Sun International hotels in Johannesburg and Toyota Tsusho in Durban, where we had our first installation," he said.
Schwedhelm's son Bradley said: "This is amazing technology as the sun used to be air con's worst nightmare. It is such a turnaround. Now, with this system, the hotter it is, the cooler it becomes."
